Short Sea Shipping – E-Learning Centre launched for trials

The Maritime Competence Centre MARIKO.RIS at the University of Applied Sciences Oldenburg/Ostfriesland/Wilhelmshaven, Germany has developed an eLearning Centre for Short Sea Shipping together with European partners in maritime business. A test version for a 6 week trial period has now been launched. The eLearning Centre provides a comprehensive knowledge platform for short sea shipping business which is split up in two modules: “Maritime Transport” covers the nautical-technical part, such as types of vessels, routes, ports, chartering and insurance. “Transportation in the EU focussing on Short Sea Shipping” highlights the environmental and economic point of view, as for instance a comparison of transport modes, logistics, IT and marketing as well as case studies. The development of the platform has been supported by LOGO-TEAM, Management Consultants for Logistics and Organisation in Hamburg, Germany. Their extensive knowledge and experience in maritime and logistics business was the link between theory and practice during the set-up period of the eLearning Platform. One chapter of the modules also includes a detailed learning case study how to shift commodity transports from road to sea from a manager’s point of view. The eLearning Center represents a modern and efficient way of learning. It also allows for an excellent combination of theory and practice in teaching and training. In addition the eLearning Centre can be integrated in educational programmes in universities, business academies or management trainings as well as single-user accounts in companies who are interested in short sea shipping matters. The test period is scheduled until mid of November 2005. It is planned to have a European-wide running eLearning platform by end of November 2005. The testversion of the platform will also be displayed by MARIKO.RIS and LOGO-TEAM at the world's leading fair of Intralogistics CeMAT in Hannover from 11 - 15 October 2005.
